I'm glad to make the full featured PDF named destinations Acrobat plug-in available free for academic use. PDF Destinator is an Acrobat plug-in for Windows and Mac OS X that converts PDF document bookmarks to PDF named destinations.
I'm hoping that this will make life easier for many students, professors, and researchers, especially who are using Mac. Under Mac OS X there are few alternatives to automatically create named destinations. When using named destinations, you can locate information directly from the PDF document, not just open the PDF at the first page.
You may have a MS Word thesis with a TOC in which all items in the TOC are bookmarks. There is no way to publish bookmarks as external PDF "anchors" directly from MS Word if you want to access the appropriate PDF named destination reference (something like this http://mysite.com/MyThesis.pdf#mybookmark). You can create the destinations manually, but this is very time consuming. With the plug-in you can automatically generate named destinations from bookmarks.
